this will never not be funny

Sometimes this really seems to shock people. They appear genuinely upset when I say ‘this conversation is over’ or ‘I’m actually not interested in debating this with you.’ There’s an expectation that if you care about social justice and political issues, you’re always ‘on.’ You’re always ready to debate, you’re always ready to have theoretical discussions about your own lived experiences and the issues you care about, you’re always ready to defend yourself. That’s manifestly ridiculous and unjust, an expectation that’s simply not reasonable.

Gay rights are so much more than marriage equality.

…you can seriously be fired for being gay?

yes (and y’know lesbian, bi, queer, and in even more states, trans)

…and, for trans folk, evicted or denied housing, which disproportionately affects transfeminine folk than transmasculine folk. Yay, male privilege.
Transitioning can cost you a career, your home, your family (visitation rights are often denied to trans women to prevent the children being exposed to “perversity”), and your savings.
Trans women of colour have a 1 in 12 chance of being murdered. Let me say that again: trans women of colour have a 1 in 12 chance of being murdered.
And yet…all the while GLAAD and the HRC are celebrating the success of fight for marriage equality as the fulfillment of their mission.
I had the privilege to hear a staff lawyer (cisgender white gay male, shocking I know) for GLAAD and the HRC respond to criticism about the implied exclusion of trans folk in the “gay rights” movement. When asked specifically about ENDA, he responded with “Well, ENDA was set aside because gay people are more numerous and heteronormativity is easier to get. There arent enough trans people to matter with regard to ENDA.”
So, long story short - yes, you can be fired for being gay in some states, but you are FAR more likely to lose your life prematurely if you are trans.
…and I think that is bullshit, and its why I wont stop talking about it. Not until myself and all my sisters are all free and safe to live our lives.
